Don't Distract Yourself - Focus on What Matters
Welcome. So nice to have you here with me.
Take a few moments here.
Whenever you are tuning in.
Dial in on what really matters.
When I say that what really matters.
What comes to your mind?
Is it health or is it something bigger?
And whatever it is.
If it's something bigger and broader,
or family and life
and whatever it is for you.
How does health fit into it?
What are the ways that it supports it?
then what are the ways
that we get distracted from it?
This is what I want to really think about.
We've got foundational health practices
on this channel.
I'm dialing in with you.
Fasting at the base of that.
We're seeing that
the body is existing here in the world,
that it has resources
and energy to power us.
And if we are trying to help
our metabolism
unlock energy that is stored in there,
that's the weight loss path.
How do we help it to flow out in
as gentle and thoughtful away as we can?
Right.
Fasting space a little window
to make it easier for the body.
Many times, save
some food is not coming in.
All right.
We're trying to get that energy
flowing out.
Open up the space, and then we can see
all the other good things
that help support that path.
Some gentle movement into that space,
helping the energy to flow out.
These are the most synergistic
practices, the healthiest food only.
We're going through a thoughtful space,
fasting and movement.
And they say, man, when that time is over,
we want only the best energy
flowing into the system.
And then seeing all these practices
in the body see it mirrored in the mind.
Healthy food coming into the body,
healthy nutrition.
It's like, what are the things that we are
consuming mentally that are putting
our frame of mind in the strongest place,
giving us inspiration?
Nothing that distracts.
Here's the thing so many times.
Couldn't you describe our society
as like distraction society?
It is like everything vying for attention.
Everything trying to.
Not just in directions,
especially to buy things.
And many of those times, doesn't
that slowly,
subtly push us away from these core
practices?
The things that really matter.
Isn't it hard?
Do you find it hard to stick
in a routine of things that really matter,
or to be stepping forward
powerfully toward the things that matter?
This is what I think
a journal is a really powerful tool.
Encourage
everybody to be writing in a journal.
Maybe today we write what really matters.
Colon
you know, enlist them and write it out.
And then maybe the second one, a message
to ourself.
Don't distract yourself today.
You know,
just bring it into the present moment.
We're going to get some help
with that today.
From a tiny passage from this book
I've been reading
through Radical Acceptance
by Tara Brock from the mine
recommended it.
Loving it so far.
Here's
one of the top ways we distract ourselves.
Think of this as section.
See if you do something like this.
We keep busy. That's the section.
Nothing wrong with being busy
if it is serving us right?
Just keep it in mind.
Remember no rules. I say no rules per se.
Just things that are serving us.
And of course, having purpose.
Being on a mission. Right.
We can be on a mission to help ourselves
accomplish what really matters.
You know, if we're busy doing that,
of course, that's great.
But busyness is one of the ways
we can distract ourselves
from the things that really matter.
And that's the thing
that we got to be thoughtful to dial in.
Here's what she says.
Staying occupied is a socially sanctioned
way of remaining
distant and distant
from what really matters.
Can't you feel that distance
from so many things?
And she says here, from our inadequacy,
how often do we hear
that someone who has just lost a dear one
is doing a good job at keeping busy?
If we stop,
we run the risk of plunging in.
Even to unbearable feelings, right?
We distract ourselves.
Maybe there is a place for it.
What do you do? At the very worst points.
And then think about it
as we pull back from that,
hopefully into places not so bad
like this, but do we do the same thing?
Distract ourselves
so that we don't have to make hard choices
or do things that are difficult?
We scramble to fill ourselves,
our time, our body, our mind.
This is what we really want to focus on.
Maybe we buy something new.
Maybe we lose ourselves in some mindless
small talk.
Any gap?
Go online.
Check an email.
Turn on the music. Get a snack.
Watch TV.
Anything
to help us bury the vulnerability,
the feeling of deficiency
lurking in the psyche.
That's layer one, I think.
Take some space with me for a minute here.
See, I don't want these sort of sessions
to be rushed.
Don't rush through it.
Take a few minutes in our day
here to think about
what does our schedule look like
in this day?
Is there busyness and is that good
or is it not good?
And is there a point in it?
And maybe it's just this moment.
Give ourselves a few moments.
Say, are we on target in this day?
Are we distracting ourselves
from something that really matters?
Busy ness, I say as they're describing
it, is like one.
Manifestation.
One instance of this second session,
a way that we withdraw from our experience
of the present moment, she says.
We pull away from our feelings.
Could be fear, could be shame,
could be inadequacies of so many things.
Our fear of changing.
We do it by incessantly
telling ourselves stories about the things
that are happening in our life.
We may keep certain themes going.
What we have to do.
What has not worked.
What troubles might lie ahead?
How other people are viewing us.
How other people are not viewing us,
or how they are not meeting our needs.
How others are interfering
or letting us down.
Do you ever find yourselves
in cycles of things like that?
I think I would summarize all of those
different points of view as external.
Right.
Big thing we're trying to do,
if we're trying to get out of some
distraction, if we're really trying
to put our finger on
what are the core things that I can do
to move toward health and wholeness
and flourishing in this day?
Don't we have to stop thinking
every thought like that?
Have to bring ourselves
fully inside of our own space?
She says there's a joke about a mother
who sends a telegram to her son.
She says, start worrying.
Details to follow.
Because we live in a free
floating state of anxiety.
We don't even need a problem
to set off a stream
of disaster scenarios
living in the future.
All these things that we've listed
is creating the illusion
that we're managing our life.
Look at all the things that we're doing.
Look at all
the things that we are worrying about.
Right?
Every external thing.
It's like not moving the needle right.
Can let go of all of that.
Each of these things they listed,
you know, it's not necessarily bad
in their own right, you know.
So watch a TV sometimes, you know,
that's fine.
But maybe before you click it on.
Do a little mental check in.
Are we just distracting ourself?
Word. More value. Come.
If we just left some space.
I wish you the very best in this day.
Share your thoughts.
What is most important?
What are you going to be dialing in on?
And what are the distractions
that you really struggle with
that are keeping you from that?
Feel free to put them in the comments.
Love to have an ongoing chat with you,
and I will look forward
to seeing you back here
on the channel soon.
Have a great day everybody!
